Cane/Hat Man is first and foremost an idea. But while being an idea, Cane/Hat Man is you and Cane/Hat Man is me. He lives in a world that bears so many similarities to ours yet is foreign and exciting. He poses more questions than he does answers. Is he American? Is he British? Does he exist in this century or one of the two prior ones? In a world where anything seems possible, why focus on murder? In a world with two dimensions, why be so one dimensional? Figure 1. Old Cane/Hat Early Cave/Man Era 2004 Cane/Hat Man began when I realized it was funny to stab people. Following a brief appearance on this author's blog, Cane/Hat Man made his first venture into superstardom on the Morphine Nation website. It is safe to say without the love and support of that community and its fearless leader Jim Sterling, good ol' C/H would not be in the position he is today. Figure 2. Modern Day C/H Cane/Hat Man's origins are very much of the classical sense. In the beginning the humour was direct, sudden, and the mere wrongness of the act was enough sustenance. Over time, the 4 panel structure has been increased to 6, 8, or 12 panels as the mere shock value subsided into a more lengthy and sophisticated discourse upon various relevancies of existence. With sword in hand, he hopes to not only penetrate the flesh of those standing before him...but also the hearts of us watching him from above. Figure 3. Character arc The above graph shows the classic formula of webcomic evolution. It also serves to catch any new readers up on all that's happened in Cane/Hat Man that hasn't involved murder. If all this has happened during the first 3 and one fourths years of Cane/Hat Man's existence, can you imagine what's in store for the next 3 one fourth years? Much, I'd say. |
